Recruitment and assessment process

Step 4 - Formal assessment

Following Skills to Foster, a competency-based assessment will follow, which usually takes around three months to complete.

A fostering team social worker will make several visits to you and your family. During these visits, you will be encouraged to tell us openly and honestly about yourself, your background, experiences, and skills.

This is also an opportunity for you to learn more about fostering, such as looking after a child who has been abused, managing challenging behaviour, working with birth parents and child care law.

We will assess your ability to care for children and the needs of the children and you and your social worker will decide the number and ages of children you can foster.

All prospective foster carers and regular adult visitors to the household will be required to have criminal record (DBS) checks undertaken.

The assessment on average takes between six to eight visits and we aim to complete your assessment within 16 weeks.
